Juan-- you should be in luck-- I believe that Biblio Verlag's "L" volume of Generals' biographies will be out this year, which will provide a life to death, day by day bettter than I can fill in from Rank Lists and Keilig's 1958 "paragraph" biographies.

Walther Lucht was born in Berlin 26 February 1882 and died sometime in 1949 in Heilbronn.

Served in the army from "summer" 1901 to 31.3.32 and then there is an EXTREMELY MYSTERIOUS GAP because he left then and did not return to the German army again until 1.10.37-- over five years later, and 2 to 4 years after any willing warm body went back in as an Ergänzungsoffizier (E).

      Where WAS he???

      Leutnant 18.10.02 Ff
Oberleutnant 18.10.11 F6f in Foot Artillery Regiment 1. He was attending the War Academy when WW1 started, and went into the General Staff as
Hauptmann iG 8.11.14 L13l (changed to same date #41 in the Reichsheer)

his last WW1 General Staff posting was with 75th Reserve Division

1924 finds him in the disguised tanks etc "Transport" (---> ) section (T7) of the Reichswherministerium
      Major 1.12.25 #1

1928 on staff of Group Command 1
      Oberstleutnant circa 1931 and
      charakterisiert Oberst aD 31.3.32

(The Big Gap Here The German Military Mission to Kuomintang China suggests itself... )

      Oberstleutnant (E) 1.10.37 with seniority of 1.1.34
      Oberst (E) 1.6.38 #11

January 1939 he was at the OKH, roster of officers detached at the disposal of the Chief of the Army General Staff

      1.9.39 Commander, Artillery Regiment 215
      6.2.40 Arko 44
      1.1.42 Harko 310
17.2.42 acting as CO of 87th Infantry Division
      1.3.42 Commander 336th Infantry Division
22.7.43 Sector Commander on the Kerch Straits
      1.11.43 CO LXVI Army Corps
      March 1945 CO IInd Army
      15.4.45 CO LXXXII Army Corps
      20.4.45 CO XIII Army Corps

In WW1 he received both classes of Iron Cross, the Hamburg Hanseatic Cross, and the Austro-Hungarian Military Merit Cross 3rd Class with War Decoration. He was never wounded then.

German Cross in Gold 12.3.42 for action as CO 87th Inf Div
KCIC 30.1.43 as CO 336th Inf Div
Oakleaves 9.1.45 as CO LXVI Corps

What is even MORE strange than his five year absence at the most crucial period of expanding the peacetime Wehrmacht is that for an officer of his age, his effective service SHOULD have ended with some rear echelon posting as an elderly Generalmajor. Instead he was promoted up two further ranks and seems ALWAYS to have been engaged at the front in heavy COMBAT. This is not unique, but extremely unusual for a "retread" like him.

Biblio should have All The Answers in print later this year.

            Hi Rick!

Just a small correction: "March 1945 CO IInd Army" should read March 1945 CO 11th Army.

            Regards,

            VJK
