I believe it was a Kampfgruppe of the 17. SS Pz.Gre.Div. "Götz von Berlichingen".

In fact I believe the bulk of 17 SS were in the Metz area refitting when the Americans attacked. There was also an ad hoc infantry battalion formed from the personell of the SS Signal School.

yes because I found this detection plate on the scene of a battle between US soldiers and the SS soldier
