    22 (LL) Infanterie Division

Anyone know what elements of 22 (LL) Infanterie Division actually served in Africa?
According to my references only Gren.Rgt. 47 and II/Art.Rgt. 22 served there however I have a Soldbuch to a member of Fla Btl. 22 who arrived in Africa 21.11.1942!!!

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Ian

    Hello Ian.
The division history gives the same information as you state. However it makes mention that 4-barrel A.A.guns were airlifted to North Africa. Probably reimental A.A.company. It seems possible that individual specialists were transferred to complement peronnel.

      Thanks Bernhard,

I would imagine that there were other elements that were shipped over but too small to mention....
Incidentally does the Division history mention much about Major Kurt Tremmel? He was the CO of Fla Btl. 22.

      Regards, Ian

        Hello Ian.
Maj. Tremmel is not mentioned in the Div.History as Kdr.Fla.Btl.22 . I have a doc.group to a member of this battalion. Will have a look upon my return from a short trip ref. possible signature.

            Hi Polux,

I too have a Soldbuch to a member Gren.Rgt. 47 (10 Kp. to be precise!) who arrived in Afrika on 9.11.1942.

            Bernhard,

I have it somewhere where Tremmel was CO of Fla Btl. 22 but cannot remember where the info came from.....there is no indication in his Soldbuch and all his awards were prior to his service with 22 or after!

            Cheers, Ian

Found it...according to Wegmann & Zweng "Dienststellen, Kommandobehörden und Truppenteile des Heeres" Hauptmann Kurt Tremmel (mispelt as Tremme !) was CO from 30.10.1942 until 12.4.1943.

              Fla Btl.(mot) 22

              Oblt.d.R. Siemer: 20.12.40 -
              Maj. Kohlhaas:
              Hptm. Hirschfeld, Hans v. :8.3.41 -
              Maj. Hoerner:
Hptm. Tremme, Kurt: 30.10.42 (he was actually promoted to Major 1.7.1941!)
              Maj. Augustin: 12.4.43

I would have expected a mention in the unit history somewhere!?

              /Ian

                Hello Ian.
The doc.group of a member of this unit does not show any signature of Maj.K.Tremmel.
The earlier mentioned division history shows all of the commanders listed by you above with the exception of Oblt.d.R. Siemer and Maj. Tremmel.
I should point out that the division history is a rather slim volume which appeared in 1952 when only scanty official records were available . The sources quoted did not include any from the Fla.Btl.22 .
