Hello, this is'ny a query about the Whermacht, but I thought that I'd give it a try. I have what I believe is a tschako to a Prussian Garde Jaeger / Schutzen officer - black cloth covered body, no ventilation holes, gilt or brass chin scales, no cockades other than a Prussian other ranks field cockade. The liner is of leather with flat topped tonguesThe outline of the missing helmet plate is that of a large 8-pointed star, which appears to be consistent with the plate of the Prussian Garde units (although I have a vague idea that there was a Saxon Train unit that wore the fore & aft peaked Prussian style tshako?). Inside the helmet, stamped in various places in mauve is the outline of a small rectangle, containing the words "Paul Borschardt Luben". These have been applied too untidily to have been placed there by the manufacturer, I think, so perhaps these are the details of the owner of the helmet? I believe that Luben was a base for units of the Prussian Garde Jaeger / Schutzen. I'm not in a position to check the details, I may be wrong in giving the name "Borschardt". has anyone any suggestions concerning researching this man please? Or as to what unit this helmet did actually belong to?

Lüben
Lüben in Posen (now Lubin) was located in the V. Army Corps District. The only major unit stationed in the town was Dragoner-Regiment von Bredow (1.Schlesisches) Nr. 4 and certainly no Guard Jäger or Schützen.
Another possibility: The Brandenburgischisches Jäger-Bataillon Nr. 3 was based at Lübben in III. Army Corps District. It is possible that the shako originally was made there and later utilised with a Guard Star.

Glenn

Thanks, I'll hopefully be back home in a week or two & can then check the helmet markings again. I'm usually boringly retentive of such details as people & place names connected to my hobbies, but I'd better double check. Helmets are'nt a main collecting theme of mine, but the absence of ventilation discs on a tschako may date it to pre-1892? I'm taking shots in the dark without any reference books to hand.............

In case anyone's still listening.........
Just in case anybody's still out there, I've had a lot of help on identifying the helmet - probably Prussian Garde Jaeger / Schutzen officers 1871 model, manufacteured pre 1880. I had indeed got the details of the "owners" name stamp wrong - slight misspelling. The correct details ar: "Paul Borchardt / Lubben N-L", & looking at the way the stamp's applied, I was wondering if it could be a theatrical outfits stamp. Any experts on that particular subject out there? Thanks again to those that helped...Leigh.
