    Kriegsmarine Identity?

    Hi Folks,

Ok have this engraving on the back of a Spanish Cross, gives us all the details just want to know what vessel he would have obtained the cross..

    M - Marine (Kriegsmarine)

    17209 - Feldpost number

    Beckert - Owners name

    N - 513 - S
    23

    N - North

513 - 513th person inducted into the navy in 1923

    S - Sea

So Beckert from the KM - Field Postal number 17209 who was inducted as the 513th person in 1923 who was nautical personnel assigned to the North Sea Station.

Tried all the search sites listed but couldn't come up with anything relevant.

FpNr belonged to the heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper up until 1940. For the latter part of the war it belonged to army units...

    FpNr 17209

    (Mobilmachung-1.1.1940) Kreuzer "Admiral Hipper",

    (25.1.1943-31.7.1943) gestrichen

That's incorrect. The dates in brackets indicate the timeframe within which the fp number was taken into use, in this case of course it ties in with Hipper's entry into service. The 1943 date range is the period within which she was taken out of service, although she was recommissioned again in march '44.

This is the full listing for FpNr 17209, which shows what I meant by being used by army units later in the war:

        (Mobilmachung-1.1.1940) Kreuzer "Admiral Hipper",

        (25.1.1943-31.7.1943) gestrichen,

        (24.3.1944-6.11.1944) 12.8.1944 Regimentsstab u. Stabskompanie

        und Panzerjäger-Kompanie Grenadier-Regiment Ostpr.2,

        (24.3.1944-6.11.1944) 21.8.1944 Regimentsstab u. Stabskompanie

        und Panzerjäger-Kompanie Grenadier-Regiment 1142.

You said it was in use by Hipper until 1940, which is incorrect. Many with Kannapin's work don't know how to interpret the entries and believe the date range in brackets represents the timeframe within which an fp number was in use.

As for the Army units, it is in fact just one army unit. Another feature of Kannapin is that it records the name changes of a unit, as it does here.

Of course your guy didn't server onboard Hipper during the Spanish civil war, it hadn't entered service yet, but it will have been the ship he served on when he later got the Spanish cross.
