Looking for help with I. R. 322 in April 1943.

    Hi everyone,
I am looking for a little assistance with the following questions.

I have done a bit or research and have come to a bit of a dead end with my sources.

I have just received a Black Wound Badge Certificate to a Gefr. in:

    Stabs Kp. I. R. 322

It is for a single wound on the 19 March 1943.
It was awarded at Lotzen on 14 April 1943 and is signed by an Oberstabsarzt.
It is also stamped with the Reserve Hospital Lotzen stamp.

I had a look in my copy of Mitchem's Hitler's Legions (the old single volume, hard cover) and I found that the I. R. 322 was part of the 207th Division from 1939to 40-41 when the 207 th was converted to a Security Division. pp 162.

At the time (1942) the 322 is listed as a Security Regiment of the 207th Security Division. Page 206 of my copy of Mitchem also has the 322nd Security Regiment belonging to the 285th Security Division.

    Axishistory.com has the following entry for I. R. 322 "Infanterie-Regiment 322 - 207. Inf.Div. (1939-40) , 285. Sich.Div. (1941-44) , 281. Sich.Div. (1944) , 281. Inf.Div. (1945)" However their entry for the 285th Security Division shows Grenadier-Regiment 322 and not I. R. 322.

I have found an entry for the Honor Roll Clasp of the Heer to “Müller, Gottfried, 07.05.1943, Major d.R., II./Gren.Rgt. 322” on the Axishistory.com 285th Security Divison page. This shows G.R. 322 in May 1943.

    So my big questions are:

Has anybody got an ideas where I. R. 322 was in 1943?
Did it become Grenadier-Regiment 322 around April- May 1943?

    Thanks very much.

    Leigh

Hi Leigh, for the first question the 322 in 1943 was in some different places under the 281 Sicherungs-Division

In January was in the Woronovo area (near Mga) and at the end of march the regiment was in Luga.
During all the 1943 the 322 served in north Russia always under the 281 Sich-Div (later [11 November 1944] renamed Infanterie-Division).

The regiment became Grenadier Regiment on 15 October 1942.

    My books:

    - THE WEHRPAß & SOLDBUCH OF THE WH
    - THE SS TK RING
    - THE ITALIAN-GERMAN MEDAL
    - THE ANTI PARTISAN BADGE
    - THE AWARDS OF THE LW

    and more!

Thanks very much for the reply Antony.

If I.R. 322 became G.R 322 on 15 October 1942, the mention of Stabs Kp. I. R. 322 on the certificate must be incorrect.

It might have been a mistake made by the Hospital Clerk when the certificate was filled out in April 1943?

It would be a mistake......all Infanterie Regiments were renamed Grenadier Regiments on the date Anthony mentions....15.10.1942.
