    Place Names Resource

Wasn't sure were to put this thread but in here seemed the most likely place.

Is there a resource, online or other, that can help me with place names in German from WW2 and what they are called now. I find that a lot of the places mentioned in Wehrpasses are difficult to find in todays maps due to name changes, now being in another country or called something different in English.

    Thanks in advance

    Place Names

    Hi Jonathan,

if you mean place names in the "original" German territory (not occupied areas) than the place names normally did not change - except that a lot of small villages have been inorporated into bigger towns in the last 30 years - and so they lost their orginally names. But there are existing concordances.

Much more difficult is the situation in the former German areas nowadays part of Poland, Russia or Czechia or the German occupied areas in WW2.

These former German place names are only to be find in special concordances so as used in the German civil registry office.

I have such concordances in my library and whenever you (or others) need a help, let me know. I will see what I can do.

    Regards
    Gerdan

Thanks for the offer Gerdan, helpful as always.

What I'm really after is a resource that has German place names. As a simple example Charkow/Kharkov and so on.
