    Please Help!!!

    Hi guys,

Have never researched an individual soldier before and am asking on behlaf of a friend that I have met who's Grandfather was a well decorated German soldier in WW2. He is currently trying to research as much as he can as his Grandfather died when he was only 7 and he doesn't know anything of his time in the German Army (Wehrmacht)

    Here are the details;

Kapitan Wilhelm Schulz - 170th infantry division, Artillery Reg 240

From his Wehrpass I know he fought in

    1940 Jutland 9/4/40
    France 23/9/40

Army group South, advance N Romania to feodosia
    Crimea to 4/7/42
Army group North Leningrad (lake Ladoga)12/5/43 to 31/3/43
retreat to Vilna 13/2/44 to 21/8/44
    retreat through East Prussia 8/5/45

He started as a gunner , artillery forward observer, ended up a captain 20/4/45

My friend has all his groupings - medals with issued cerificates and Iron cross... simply amamzing really

Tell me where is the best place to look for details and information regrding his grandfather??

    Thanks in advance

    Regards,

    Justin

Justin have you or your friend pursued any of the following research outlets??

    Jeremy

Listed below are some sites that will help in obtaining personal records of soldier, unit research and locating lost members of the family!

The main site for requesting German records is the Deutsches Dienststelle. You can do a request but do not expect full records unless you are family member!

    http://www.dd-wast.de/

    Theres also the Bundesarchiv:

    http://www.bundesarchiv.de/

The German War Graves Commission can be found here:

    http://www.volksbund.de/graebersuche/content_suche.asp

    Maybe the Deutsches Rotes Kreuz:

    http://www.drk.de/

    And International Tracing Service:

By 'kapitan' i take it you mean Hauptmann?

If he has his wehrpass and award documents then you have all you need really, you're not going to get much more personal info from any of the sources listed above than what's already in the wehrpass. The rest is down to researching his units
Collecting German award documents, other paperwork and photos relating to Norway and Finland.

Yeah he has the wehrpass and all his awards and documents.... will post the a pic soon...

He has all the information as its grandfather but he wants the unit research, a his OPA never talked abou the war and he died before he was old enough to recolllect his journey.

Anyhow, Thanks kindly Gents, for a few pointers, I'll pass them on
