why does this quote appear as if he is disowning the "defedents"?
If they were his men, it would be to shield them from prosecution. The trial was just a big show, an excuse to execute. I think you can find several instances of allied Soldiers executing Germans in a more extreme manner. It was an operation that had strict time constraints, taking prisoners would compromise the mission but they did so anyway. They should have tried Eisenhower for abandoning all the liberated American prisoners in the east to work in the Gulags to this day.

We ....as a result of these germans actions ...regardless... killed a hundred times the ss men when captured following this report to our troops killed by Nazi atrocities. Not to mention our fire bombing cities of civilians who many were just innocent victims also.
No chances were given after malmedy by hardened front line allies.. with ANY SS men captured in battle. You reap what you sew, they brought it ...we finished it.We can only be as kind as the foes we fight, and didnt ask to be involved in this situation.
Many soldiers i interviewed as a kid were still bitter against the nazis, as The ss were so treacherous ,and many were hyped up on benzedrine at the time and as a result we followed suit with actions in the phillipines against the japanese much the same . War IS hell. Nazi were only people , and when the gun is in you face, and you want mercy, but gave none....you pay when thats the way you play.
An interesting sideline Is.... recently... the second or follow up to mein kampf hitler decided to not publish ,was found in a safe ,(it was documented as original and not a fake) and in it hitler outlined his plan to attack the united states first with bombers , and then invade, and felt we as americans were a soft nation, and would be poor fighters.
Hitler forgot Our best fighters were emigrated germans , but our resources were greater than germanys, and his self destructive attitude, as a result of his own drug addictions to amphetamines , and barbituets thru his own doctor..(loss of perspective, id say) perminently scarred not only germany , but the world..to the tune of 50 million dead.(not to mention the disabled wounded) War was inevitable I feel since this document has surfaced in recent years. So malmedy was just another ...like..."remember the maine" as a ralling cry .
Hitler should have stopped after the annexations to let things settle down to develop for 20 years, and deportations peacefully should have been the final solution.
I wonder if that had happened , and the germans national socialists still were in power today, how many here would be collecting their assorted trappings?

i think pieper is just making a point about soldiers in times of war and peace, i believe he is saying, in effect,
" when we were fighting these men were pure warriors, now they are civilians and are unrecognizable as being the same people, the only men who stayed warriors are the ones who died."
i thought he was praising the men for their past competence and courage while excusing the civilians they have become, but who knows?

As far as the 50 million figure; is that the amount of Holocaust victims plus the casualties of all combatants from engagements with German troops? Does this magically throw in the millions that Stalin killed and magically blame it on Hitler? Obviously neither was the type you would bring home to mom and dad lol. My point is much of what Stalin and Russia did was by their own choice, and in reality Stalin killed more innocents through genocide then Hitler did. The vanilla world history doesn't mention this little fact though, mainly because we were all allied with Russia. I'll never exscuse Germany, but Russia was just as terrible, and basically went un-punished for it.
