    Div.Füs.Btl.290

    Can someone tell me what the abbreviation for this unit stood for. I know they were part of the 290th Infantrie Div but cant figure out what Füs. was. Also who's signature appear on this document?

    Fusilier Bataillon 290, Infanterie Division 290

      It's slightly more complicated than that. As the war went on and the army went more from the offensive to the defensive the traditional role of the divisional aufklärungs battalion wasn't needed as much, the old organisation and equipment was also considered too light for regular infantry work which was often the main role they were called upon to do. So, new fusilier battalions or companies were created, think of them more as light infantry, more mobile than the regular infantry battalions and whose job included recon when required

            Fusilier Btl's came into existance with the type 44 Infantry Divisions, this particular one came into being on 28. September 1943
