question : KG 53 during May 1940

Is anyone aware iff there exist lists of casualty's ( both KIA or wounded ) for the 1./KG 53 on the date of 20 May 1940 ?

The following book info. "Twelve Days in May" deals w/ the Battle of France 1940 and has a fairly complete day to day listing of KIA/MIA.

Against the background of the collapse of the defending Allied armies, Cull, Lander, and Weiss provide full information on the war in the air during the German invasion. In addition to synopses of the progress of ground fighting, the authors explain the air war with daily situation reports and summaries, operational accounts broken down by sector and wing, and personal narratives of fighter pilots involved in the fighting. As part of each daily summary, the following tabular information is provided: aggregate British claims for the day, by enemy aircraft model; Luftwaffe losses actually attributed to British fighters; individual claims for the day; British losses for the day.

Material is also presented for the other air forces involved, notably a lengthy OB for Luftflotte 2 and Luftflotte 3 at the beginning of the campaign, but this is primarily an account of British operations.

Of particular interest in the concluding chapter is a discussion about the decision by Dowding and Churchill to halt the flow of additional fighter squadrons to the continent; the authors present an interesting new perspective on how the RAF was nearly drained away.

After looking through Heinz Kiehls "Kampgeschwader 53 there appears to have been only one casualty (KIA) for 1/KG 53 on 20 May 1940. That was Unteroffizer Albert Schweighardt, Bordfunker, lost in France due to Absturz.

Hi Stijn,
On the 20th, 1/KG 53 lost a He 111 (code A1+EH) during a raid against troops in the Amiens - Abbeville area. It was shot down by G.C. III./3 (S/Lt. Behal and A/C Roger). Crashed 7 km NE of Péronne. Crew:
Uffz Walter Weigle (FF)
Oblt. Karl Sauer (Bo)
Uffz. Albert Schweighart (Bf)
Ofw. Ernst Klank (Bm)
and Uffz. Hans Mathner (Hs)

I will obtain a grouping from a later trained glider pilot who was wounded during this exact crash as a member of the I/KG 53

Is there more known about FF Walter Weigle?

I know he awarded the LW Pokal and was he also a GC or KC winner?
Not sure where to find more infos about him.

The book The Battle Of France - Then & Now has listings of all aircraft shot down on the Western Front from September 1939 to June 1940, and in a lot of cases photos of the crashed aircraft.
If you do not have the book I will have a look tomorrow when I get home from work to see what it says about this incident.

Update 11/09/08 - There is nothing in the above named book that hasn't already been mentioned, and no photos of the crashed aircraft.
