    Hello

A "Stoßtrupp" was no certain unit. A company (this could be any frontline company infantry, reconnaissance, engineer etc..) formed Stoßtrupps to accomplish certain tasks.
A Stoßtrupp was usually the size of a Gruppe (10-12 men) lead by either a NCO or officer (these were then called Offiziersstoßtrupp).

Example: The company leader of the 1st company received the order of the battalion to take out two machinegun bunkers securing a bridge. He then decides to take these bunkers out with two Stoßtrupps.
Usually the company leader would then ask for volunteers for such an attack.
Most companies had their battle tested Stoßtrupp leaders which lead pretty all Stoßtrupps of the company.
Then the Stoßtrupp is organised. This means the positions are determined... machinegunner 1, 2, 3, close and long range handgrenade throwers, smoke grenade thrower, close combat soldiers with bajonet etc...
The soldiers receive their grenades, ammo and instructions.

Then the Stoßtrupps determine the tactic how they will crack the bunkers maybe in cooperation with the second one etc...
As said a Stoßtrupp was usually group size but also larger size Stoßtrupps were formed if the situation made it necessary. They then were maybe reinforced with a engineer element (flamethrower, mineclearer etc..) or any other necessary things.

hope this gives you an idea,
    Christoph
