    MIA from "GvB"

I'm looking for information about the SS-Sturmann Leo STREHL (born 21 7 1925) from the I./SS-Art. Rgt. 17 MIA in Normandie on August 8th 1944.

    STREHL, Peter Ludwig Leo

Born 21 July 1925 in Berlin.

    26.1.1943 to 11.2.1943 8./SS-Art. Ers. Rgt.
    12.2.1943 to 18.11.1943 III./SS-Art. Rgt. 10
    18.11.1943 to 4.8.1944 I./SS-Art. Rgt. 17

Listed as missing in France on 4 August 1944. His Wehrpass and Gesundheitsbuch are at NARA and can be found here:

    RG 242 AA3343-SM-S038

Is something of his for sale? You are the second person requesting info on this guy in the last two weeks. Let me know if you have particular questions and I'll try and answer them for you.

    I hope this helps. Cheers,

    Mike

      Thanks MJC,

Are you sure that the original Wehrpass is in the NARA ? Because I have a copy of this document and I think that it is in a privat collection.

Have you other information about this guy ? Does he was killed, POW or MIA for ever ?

      Regards

        Hi Christof,

I should have been more explicit. NARA maintains microfilm images of the record collections returned to the BundesArchiv over the last three decades. If the same Wehrpass is now in a private collection, it means that the document was stolen either from NARA prior to return to Germany, or from the BA. Neither too surprising, but still a shame.

In answer to your other question, there is only the indication that he is missing. No further update, but you can check the Volksbund or WASt for additional data.

In addition, you can check his unit records, but it is unlikely he will be mentioned.

        Good Luck,

        Mike

Intresting...This summer I picked up a MIA soldbuch also from the Artillery Rgt. of the 17 SS Pz. Gren. Div. - SS Sturmmann Menke Bontjer.
He was not listed on the war graves site until this year. (?)
His MIA date is unknown. Last entry in his book is June 21, 1944.

Mike is a professional researcher and does top notch work. He can find any information for you if it is on file at the US National Archives Unlike Germany, the personnel and other records in the US are for public access. The US copied hundreds of thousands of German records after the War and then returned the originals to the German Govt. Many Europeans do not know this and it is a valuable resource for collectors.
