Most probably the clerk that made a mistake....of course we still do not know the exact date he took over as Gr.Kdr....perhaps he had only just stepped into that position and there was someone else between him and Zemsky!

I will take a more in depth look later but preparing dinner for the family now!!!!

    Here is Zemsky........

      II./St.G. 1
Here is my reconciliation of the Stellungsbesetzung based on all information available that appears to be reasonably accurate plus your very welcome fresh input:

      FpNs: II./St.G. 1 (L 31790)

      Kommandeur:
      Hptm. Anton Keil (RK) (9 July 1940 - 29 August 1941) KIA
      Hptm. Johann Zemsky (1 September 1941 – 28 August 1942) KIA
      Hptm. Robert-Georg Freiherr von Malapert-Neufville (DKG, RK), acting (13 January 1942 - 21 May 1942) KIA
      Hptm. Otto Ernst (DKG) (c.September 1942 - 13 October 1943) WIA

A possible alternative is that Malapert-Neufville's appointment on 13 January 1942 was m.d.W.d.G.b. (provisional) rather than acting with Zemsky absent during that period. When M-N was killed on 21 May, Zemsky was reappointed. But that does not feel right to me. I think Z was called away on 13 January to temporarily serve as acting Kdr. of another unit, or he was wounded and out of acting from 13 Jan to 21 May, or back in the Reich for a course, etc.

Do you have any additional information that may change the above?

        Hi Larry,

Looks like were are getting there, however with Frhr.v. Malapert-Neufville...according to Obermaier page 41, he was promoted Hptm. March 1942 and at the same time Gr.Kdr. II/St.G. 1. However on his death 21.5.1942 he is recorded as being Staka. 5/St.G 1!?!?!?!

The confusion with Neubert of course is he was Gr.Kdr. of II/Schl.G.1....Schlacht Geschwader and not Stuka Geschader.....later renamed Schlacht Geschwader but witht he designation SG 1.

Will have a dig around later but tired from a hectic week at work and could do with a beer....or two

          Hi Ian,

Thanks for your continuing thoughts and input. I think Obermaier is a bit confused, too! His material has more than a few errors but it's certainly better that Brütting.

            Larry,
Please let us know when the books are available. I've also got some paperwork and award sets to some Stuka flyers, and have always been interested in these units.

I have a goblet to Gunther Jacoby, II/Stuka Geschwader 1. Look on this thread and there's my old friend Ian! Any info on this man please? He won the DKiG but I can find nothing more... Date of death nothing. Thank you.

                  Hi Brian,

This is what I have found at the moment:

                  Jacoby, Günther. Born 25.5.1921.
                  Flugzeugführer. II./Stuka-Geschwader 1

                  13.07.1942 Ehrenpokal
                  05.11.1942 Deutsches Kreuz in Gold

                  Oblt. 1.5.1943
                  Hptm. 1.6.1944 with 10(Pz.)/Schl.G. 1

Can not find him in any loss reports etc. however there is an Oblt. u. Staffelführer Günther Jacobi with 10(Pz.)/Schl.G. 77 who crash landed 17.11.1943 at Bubtli, Russia......typo on the name?

Incidentally 10(Pz.)/Schl.G. 1 was formed on 27.1.1944 from 10(Pz.)/Schl.G. 77, which in turn was formed 18.10.1943 in from 10.(Pz)/St.G.1.

                  /Ian

Thank you Ian! Wouldn't be great to know how many tanks he stopped?

                      Hi Brian,

On 1 March 1943 Oberleutnant Jacoby was serving with the Versuchsstaffel für Panzerbekämpfung, testing the new Junkers Ju 87 G anti-tank aircraft, alongside the likes of Hans-Ulrich Rudel. The Oberleutnant Jacobi wounded on 17 November 1943 is the same fellow.

                      Cheers,
                      Andrew A.

THAT is VERY cool. Thank you. Serving along Rudel, doesn't get much better than that.

He could be in these films with Rudel!!!
