    No 'J' Company

The TO&E (Table of Organization & Equipment) of a U.S. Army Infantry Regiment in WW II consisted of Three Infantry Battalions: 1st Battalion Companies A-D, 2nd Battalion Companies E-H, and 3rd Battalion, Companies I-M (there being no 'J' Company).

Does anyone know why there was no 'J' Company?

I'm not the right person to answer but one thought that struck me was that J could easily be confused with I?

That was the conclusion I've come to as well, but I've never seen anything 'official' on it. There should be something in the regulations somewhere, but after years of looking it has eluded me.

The phonetics for those two letters during WW II were Item and Jig. Just a thought, but I wonder if the derogatory and deeply offensive racial connotation implied by the second of the two might have also had something to do with it? The primary reason, though, certainly has to be the frequent confusion of the two letters both when typed and handwritten.
