Inf Ers Batl function

Hello all,

I'm trying to translate my Soldbuch and have a general question on the Inf. Ers. Batl concept. The soldier's soldbuch that I have served in 2 different I.E.B.s (IEB 397 and IEB 12) during late 1941 and early 1942, but he still was wounded and received the EK II Klasse in the hospital. Is there a gap in documentation of the book that is causing me to be confused? Or is it possible he saw combat while in the IEBs? He further distinguished himself in IR 533.

Please let me know if there are places for me to look.

Can someone help me on this IEB issue?

The German Army was structured with a with a replacement battalion for each regiment. For example, IEB 12 (Infanterie Ersatz Battalion) was the replacement unit for Infanterie Regiment 12. The I.E.B. served a dual purpose of training new troops before they were sent to the parent regiment in the field and for the rehabilitation of wounded troops who were to eventually be sent back to the regiment.

Your soldier would not have seen action with the I.E.B., though he may have received his EK while there, it would have been for previous actions.
