born in Chemnitz 3 April 1893, died 1968. Commissioned in Saxon Infantry Regiment 104:

WW1 awards: Saxon St Henry Order-Knight 19.9.16 as Lt and Adjutant of I./IR 104, carrying messages and patrols through territory recently seized by the British on the Somme in chaotic conditions where no one knew where the lines were.
    Saxon Merit Order-Knight 2nd with Swords 2.6.16 IR 104
    Saxon Albert Order-Knight 2nd X 20..7.15 IR 104
and Prussian Iron Crosses 1st and 2nd Classes. Never wounded in WW1, which is fairly amazing!

Knight's Cross with Oakleaves WW2, main field commands seem to have been Inf Rgt 192 from September 1, 1939, 22nd Inf Dic October 1941 to July 1942, and XXXIII Corps Christmas Day 1943 to August 1944. The rest of the time in "inspector" posts.

          Thanks Guys,
The reason that I ask is because I have an EK2 Doc awarded on 4.Sept to Inf.Rgt.16 and it seems to be signed by Wolff. This dosent make much sence to me but you guys backed up my guess that he wasn't commanding the 22 Inf.Div untill 10 Oct.
          Any suggestions on this?
          Thanks
          Glenn

            Hello Glenn.
Of additional interest may be that the later Gen.d.Inf. L. Wolff was severely wounded in the face at close range on 25.May 1940. He spent until May 1941 in hospitals and went through nearly 50 surgical procedures with a subsequent recuperation period until he assumed the position of director of a staff at Kriegsschule Breslau. . The subsequent assignments were already given by other contributors above. He was again admitted to hospital in Oslo and then Berlin while in a command position in Central Norway which lasted from Sep.1944 to December 1944. Photos of Gen. Wolff show the severe scarring of left side his face.
The above information is from Peter Stockert's 4 volume reference book on the Oakleaves recipients.
BTW: are you certain the signature on the EK II document is that of Gen. L.Wolff ? Being much interested in the 22.I.D. for family reasons I have several docs incl. a signature of Gen. Wolff.

              Hi Bernhard,
I am not 100% that it is his-but pretty close.
I have 2 docs signed buy him but the signitures are different. The EK2 doc has initials in front of it(I N maybe) and the latter has no initials .I'm sorry but I don't have the technology to give you a picture but I would love it if you would show off yours to us and I will tell you if they are similar. The 22nd is my new favourite passtime at the moment and I have seen quite a few Docs from this Division online and I am fairly sure that I have seen both signatures before.
The EK in question signature rank is Generalmajor and stamp is 22. Division-both of which fit.
I am thinking that maybe they were printed but not handed out for a month and that would give Wolffs instead of von Sponeck's signature.
              What are your thoughts?
              Glenn

                Sorry-forgot to add this
Maybe he was in the 22ID at this time but didn't take over command untill 10 Oct 41?

Does someone know when he got his silver wound badge and if that was for being wounded in the face?

And he got his RK a day after his wound, is this also for being wounded?

                      Hello:

Gen.d.Inf.L.Wolff received the EK ii Spange with date of 13.May 1940, the EK I Spange with date of 18.May 1940 and the R.K. with date of 26.May 1940.

The ref.book by Franz Thomas lists his leadership in the crossing of the rivers Schelde and Lys. The last listed was crossed near Nevele on 25.May 1940, appr. 5000 prisoners were made. For these actions the R.K. was awarded ( not for the severe wound suffered for which woundbadges had been instituted ).On the same day Oberst Wolff was severely wounded by a close range bullet near Deynze on the Lys River. As mentioned by Rick Research on another thread, Gen.Wolff went through WW I without a wound, rather rare for a frontline soldier. So the Silver Wound Badge he received, must have been for that wound which made many surgical operations necessary during his years stay in hospital and apparently caused the loss of his left eye judging by a photo. A repeat stay in hospital from September to December 1944 was necessary.

                        Hi Glenn!

You say "I have 2 docs signed buy him but the signitures are different. The EK2 doc has initials in front of it(I N maybe) and the latter has no initials". Could the "I N" be "I V" - in vertretung, which means that someone else has signed the document on behalf of. This could explain why there are 2 different signatures.

                        Regards,
