Help - who said this quote

for all you fellow historians out there with a good memory

I'm writing a thesis and need help remembering who said a quote - It went something (but not exactly) like this " the german army was not outfought - it was ground down, bled white and pushed to the wall by sheer weight of numbers"
I need to get this right in order to include it. any help would be appreciated

As in your case, the words are familiar but I cannot attribute them to a particular author or work. If no one here knows the answer, then you may have to go to the library and check through the dictionaries of famous quotations.

Are you talking about Hindenburgs "Dolchstosslegende"?

Its possible that the quote was from WW1 - in either war it could be accurately applied; but I dont think it had much to do with the thought of an undefeated army stabbed in the back; it was the idea that weight of numbers decided the conflict more than any other allied advantage.
        thanks,

You know, it almost sounds like something Patton might have said right after the war ended. He shot his mouth off to reporters almost daily for a while until he got in serious trouble with Eisenhower, Marshall and the White House. You might want to check and see if it's one of his comments that were viewed at the time as political bloopers.

The first person who came to mind was Norman Schwarzkopf
