Gen.Lt. Gustav Kastner-Kirdorf held that position on that date.

Thanks Larry!.....but I thought Kastner-Kirdork had the rank of General der Flieger since 1.7.1941...........

You are correct. So you have an anomaly that must be explained. Is it someone else's signature that just looks like his? Is it his auto-signature but some clerk typed the wrong rank? Is the document a forgery? Unfortunately, I do not know the answer to any of those questions.

OR was there sub branches of the luftwaffenpersonalamts.....referring to the I.V. under 'lufwaffenpersonalamts'. Looking at documents in D Niemann's book, there are others denoted I.A. etc, each signed by lesser ranks than Gen der Flieger (eg Oberst, generalmajor, generalleutnant)

The correct form is "i.V." and not "I.V." Of course this means in Vertretung (signing for, signing in place of, etc.). It was and still is a well-established abbreviation going back many decades before World War II, so it is difficult to understand why someone would use the capital "I" instead of the lower case "i".

And there certainly were sub-divisions within the Luftwaffenpersonalamt, 5 major ones: LP 1, LP 2, LP 3, LP 4 and LP 5. So there were a lot of senior officers running around, including a few Generalmajore, but a Generalleutnant? That seems a bit doubtful. Further, I have never seen reference to the position of Stellvertreter Chef des Luftwaffenpersonalamtes (Deputy Chief of the Air Force Personnel Office). That position might have called for a Gen.Lt., but I don't think the position existed.

Finally, that signature sure looks like "Kastner" to me. If someone else signed "i.V." in his place they wouldn't have forged his signature. I believe they would have had to use their own name. Nichts wahr?

Many thanks for your wealth of information..'Kastner, did spring to mind when I first saw the signature, but I am not so sure...

here is a scan (courtesy D Niemann) of another similar document section...again I.V.
