Records of Austrian Soldiers in WWII

I heard that the US Army destroyed all military services records of Austrians for the WWII time period in 1957. Is this true and are there exceptions. Was there any reason given for doing this?

In over 40 years of researching the archival remains of the military and related records of the Reich, I have never heard that one. In fact, I am staggered that such a full-of-holes tale is making the rounds. I work daily with Luftwaffe personnel records and those of the Austrians are all there. I also worked with the Kurt Waldheim legal defense team in the late 1980's and we had no trouble getting his full records from BA-ZNS in Aachen. Because of my proximity to this subject, I am sure I would have seen something by now if this were true.

I thought it was quite odd as well and wanted to ask. I have never heard of the Army getting rid of anything like that. Good to hear that.

The statement is from Chris Mason's Soldat (Volume 8) book on FJ, page 224.

Sorry, it was published by Lee but written by Mason, missed that.
