    Basic question

Sorry to have to ask such a basic question but a forum search does not reveal any results.
Just would like to know what the 7./J.R.2 stands for on this certificate.
    Many thanks

That's 7./I.R.2. The wartime German "I" used the same letter on the typewriter as the "J". It means: 7. Kompanie of Infanterie-Regiment 2.

To help you understand a litte more Andy, the 7 company belonged to the 2nd battalion of the regiment. As there was only one 7th company within a regiment it wasn't necessary to add which battalion it belonged to.
As with most infantry regiments at the time Inf.Rgt.2 consisted of 14 companies, 4 in each of the three battalions, a 13th infantry gun company and a 14th anti-tank gun company.

When you see Roman numerals used, for example II./ I.R.2 then it refers to the battalion.
