His date of promotion to Leutnant was 1.1.38 (128) - Source: Das Deutsche Heer 1939.

A Major Forstner is listed in the 1944-45 Heer Ranglist, also in 136 Gebirgsjäger-Regiment. RDA for Major 1743 (45b2)

You can get a bit more info on this Regiment on the Lexicon

actually for Heer and Luftwaffe officers the correct branch is Bundesarchiv Militärarchiv Freiburg.

They are somewhat more open to helping researchers than WASt, but there´s no guarantee that they will decide you have the "right to know"

My recommendation is that you avoid any mention of militaria, and focus on the historical aspects. You could, for example, decide you will write an article for a military history magazine on the mountain troops.

              Here's a little more.

              Born 13.06.1916 in Neu-Ulm
Awarded the DKiG whilst commanding the 13 Kp. (one of 3 men to be award the DKiG at the time and the first 3 to be awarded to the division)

I also know he commanded II./GJR 136 from March to Dec. 1943 as Hauptmann. After that i don't know, he was certainly never in command of GJR 136 or it's sister regiment 137. At a guess i'd say he attended a regimental commanders course in early '44 then given command of a regiment somewhere.
Collecting German award documents, other paperwork and photos relating to Norway and Finland.

Jens, you can have someone look for his service file in Washington DC. If you are interested pm me. They may have it. Hit or miss.
