    Unit ID??

    Hi,
I have a soldbuch belonging to a Jager. He was originally posted to the GJ Replacement Btl 99 before being posted to a 'field' unit that is listed as Geb Trager Batl 55 (both in handwriting and unit stamp). Can anyone inform me of any details of this unit or is this just another way of listing a GebirgsJager Batl (i.e. Trager instead of Jager)?

Could you post any pics of the SB or the unit stamp?

Gebrirgs Träger Bataillon 55 was a Corps Troop unit attached to XIX Gebirgs Armee Korps.

Could you tell me in this context what Trager means? I will try and take some photos of the SB and unit stamp.

In this context "Träger" means conveyance, as in to transport something from one place to another. Every Gebirgsverband had Träger units of platoon and company size. There were also a few of battalion size. The units consisted of pack animals and other means of transporting rations and ammunition through rugged, mountainous terrain to keep the forward positions of the Gebirgsjäger supplied, and to transport wounded on the way back. From 1942 on, the personnel that comprised these "Träger" units were increasingly PoWs, Hiwis and local hires along with an ever decreasing German cadre.

Gebirgs-Träger-Btl. 55 was formed on 28 August 1939 in Wehrkreis VII and was employed in northern Norway and Finland from late 1940 to the end of the war.

Not wounded but had some sort of issue with his left ankle 24.5. - 23.6.43.

Also he had an x-ray on 21.9.1943.

The problem I have with these kind of things is trying to read the writing as it can seem to be really illegible sometimes.
