panzerjäger Kompanie 1278, Sturmgeschütz abt 1278

Does anyone have any info on these? I have searched the web and cannot find anything. I have some docs from a Kurt Hochberger that started out as a Gefreiter in the 205 Inf. Div and received the EK2 in July of 1940. He then received the GAB in October 1944 with the Sturmgeschuetz Abteilung 1278. Black wound badge was received in October 1944 for wounds received in January 1943 with the silver WB received n December 1944 for wounds received in November 1944. Both wound badges were awarded while he was in the Panzerjaeger Kompanie 1278. I'll try to get the documents scanned in the next several days. Thanks for any help.

I just check the Georg Tessin volumes for you and there were no German units of any sort with the number 1278. Sorry.

These units tended to be late war and were formed from Panzerjäger and/or even remained Panzerjäger.....on occassion the Sturmgeschütz definition was kept for a matter of weeks or days!

When I see these units I knock the "1" off and look at the units and or Division.....in this case 278 Infanterie Division...and voila!

      Panzerjäger-Abteilung 278
      Formed 22. März 1944 in Italy form the Stab of Panzerjäger-Abteilung 19 (L) and Panzerjäger-Kompanie 278 and the schweren Panzerjäger-Kompanie 1278.
Under: 278 Infanterie Divison: Winter 1943/44 upper Italy, June Ancona, August Rimini, 1945 Po, Etsch.

I could not find any reference to Sturmgeschütz Abteilung 1278 at all.....

      /Ian

Guys, I do appreciate the information. Interestingly enough the stamp shows 278 rather than 1278 and I always wondered about that . I'll have to scan these docs and post them as this could become quite interesting.
