Oberleutnant Grupp, DKiG

Can anyone help me out with any information available on Oberleutnant Karl Grupp, winner of the DKiG.

He was a Kompaniefuhrer in a Panzerpionerbattalion, KIA possibly round about November 1944. But that's all I know.

Thanks for the help Manuel - was there any indication in your source of where/when Grupp was killed?

no, but I think the dk was given to him after he was killed,I will check where this unit was at this time and let you know.
have you seen any photos of him wearing his dk?

Thanks for your help. I don't have any pictures of him wearing the DKiG, just two undated photos in which he has EKI, EKII, Ostmedaille and General Assault Badge. I also have a death notice dated 8 November 1944 (which could of course have been posted some time after his death) which describes him as a holder of the DKiG.

Interestingly, it also says that he had been wounded five times when he was killed in action, so he should also have been awarded the Gold Wound Badge after his death (although he isn't even wearing a Black Wound Badge in either of the photos).

My research puts his unit on the Eastern Front, Southern Sector at this time, possibly near Kresun, south of Kiev, where his Division suffered heavy casualties before being withdrawn to France in June 1944.

Hi James. Grupp has been KIA in Lorraine on Oct.22nd 1944, he is now buried in Reillon. You supposed right, he has been awarded the WBG. Here it is. Signature Major Bödicker. </P>
