      Hi Raymond,

      Thanks! Yep, that's the problem. I looked there and that seems to be all the info ouot there: just his unit at one point in time. Hope to find more, after all he lived till 2007!!!

        Sell joined the army pre-war. Participated in the Poland, West and East campaigns. DKiG on 24.05.1942 when Oberleutnant im Stab der I./Panzerregiment 31 (5. Panzerdivision). Promoted Captain and made Kommandeur of Panzeraufklärungsabteilung 8 (8. Panzerdivision). The unit fought in the defense of Budapest at the end of 1944 and retreated through Moravia. During these battles Sell again distinguished himself and in 15.02.1945 he was mentioned im Ehrenblatt des Heeres and received the Ehrenblattspange. He was awarded the RK on 14.04.1945.

            Dr. Hans-Joachim Sell

            Sell, Dr. Hans-Joachim, * 25. Juli 1920 in Neustettin/Pommern; † 30. Mai 2007 in Freiburg im Breisgau.

            Sell grew up in Berlin, 1938 he joint the Wehrmacht, at the end of the war he was Hpt., quite late, at 14.04.1945 he was awarded the RK.

            After the War he became an author. In his narration "Der lange Nachruf auf den gefallenen Freund" (The long obituary on the killed friend) he describes how he and his Adjutant tried in the endphase of the war to prevent his subordinates from beeing burnt by undermining direct Orders and his own mode of Warfare.

            After the war he studied Philosophy, German language and literature and ethnology at Frankfurt am Main. He received a PhD in Ethnology.

            From 1960 to 1968 he was foreign correspondent in Spain until his employment permit was retrieved from the Franco-Government because of critical news coverage.

            Following this Period he did journeys to Africa, South- and Mid-America.

            1978 Sell became a free Author in Freiburg.
