Research, Its Importance, and Where to Go

This is an unvarnished, shameless plug for WAF member "Waffenreich" -- Bob Ruzzier.

Bob has completed two research projects for me now on named tunics -- one in my collection (Oberleutnant Heinz Casper -- a Heer Ordinance (W) Officer) and one for a friend. My friend has had his tunic for decades but this is the first time he has researched it.

Bob is the man to go to. He lives not far from Washington, DC and travels to the NARA regularly. He also knows what he is doing once he gets there -- you have to know where to look.

On both occasions, he has managed to find document groups/files on these men which revealed much about their military career. I have been extremely pleased. I have also been surprised how few people take advantage of a service like this.

I read a lot of comments here about how we are "in it for the history". Well, you really can't be completely unless you carry out the research. Most of us don't have the time, proximity, experience, and skill at research that people like Bob do. Thus, their services are invaluable. I wouldn't carry out brain surgery -- I wouldn't know what I was doing -- and I would be lost at NARA, I am quite sure, and would waste an enormous amount of time there.

I highly recommend "Waffenreich". Send him a PM and have him do some research for you. He can give you all the details on prices. I am not posting his e-mail here for now but will later, with his permission.

    Best regards,

    Mike

It's best to take a very good image of the nametag in your uniform. This helps Bob in deciphering the name. On my friend's tunic, the name of the officer was actually misspelled in the 1939 rank list. But correct, of course, in the NARA archives -- and despite this, he was able to find it.

EM/NCO's are not researchable. Sorry for that.

A lot has been published on various areas that is complete, such as Generals, certain award winners, aces, some SS aspects, Gauleiters, etc. Often the data is already in a published work, fully corrected as Personalakte are often riddeled with factual errors.
