    SS Ersatz Unit Help

Can one of you guys tell me whether 4. SS/ E. BTL. NORD was an actual unit?

    Thanks in advance.

    Nord

    Matt,

This sounds like a replacement unit for either SS-Kampfgruppe Nord (raised 28 February 1941), later SS-Division Nord or SS-Gebirgs-Division "Nord" (establishment order issued 15 January 1942, change implemented 3 March 1942), which became 6. SS-Gebirgs-Division "Nord" when included in the overall numbering scheme in September 1942.

However, the only reference for a replacement unit I have found (in Tessin) gives SS-Feldersatz-Btl. 6 which was raised on 22 October 1943 from SS-Feldersatz-Btl. Nord. This latter battalion is only quoted as having 2 companies.

The designation you quote sounds plausible, but I cannot find anything to confirm it.

What context does it apear in?

SS Ersatz Bataillon Nord was formed September 1941 in Wehlau for the SS Infanterie Regiments (former Totenkopf Standarten) 4, 6, 7, 11 and K in Norway and the Netherlands.
15.3.1942 became SS Gebirgsjäger Ersatz Bataillon in Trautenau.

      Source Tessin....

This no doubt is on Erkennungsmarke?

        Beat me to it

I was just about to say that I forgot to check Tessin volume 14 and add the same info as Ian.

The magic "6" distracted me and then I forgot to check the rest before posting.

The dog tag occurred to me, too. Great minds think alike, or in German "zwei Doofen, ein Gedanke" ;-).

            Hi Guys,

Indeed it is on an Erkennungsmarke- I'm just looking for confirmation that there was actaully a 4. Kompanie in SS Ersatz Bataillon Nord. The disc looks good to me, but I just want to be as sure as possible. A Battalion ought to have 4 Companies, but, depending on when during the war one was raised, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see only 2.

Just so I have it clear: There was an SS Ersatz Bataillon Nord, but you can't say for sure if it ever had 4 Kompanien- is that right?

            Thanks.

Yes it did exist that is why I mentioned it earlier with the date of its formation.....no idea how many Companies it had as that info is not mentioned, otherwise I would have mentioned it.
