Unfortunately Larry, financial gain motivates a vast majority of people today. In school we have the problem of getting kids enthused about reading as all they are interested in is the latest gadget. Interesing this behaviour is to an extent mirrored in collecting circles.

The publishing industry is in a state of regression (down 12% since 1992) because no one buys books anymore. As you and I and a dwindling number of others know, books are where "the good stuff" is - not on the internet! It's all about researching and investigating the item one has just bought; not buying it, sleeping with it under one's pillow for a week and then re-selling it. You and Rob are benchmarks here that others here should be challenged to emulate.

Well, I would like to update this thread with a second (!) period photograph of Blood Order #274 in wear.

MANY thanks to my good friend Raymond Griffiths for sending me this spectacular find!

This image appears in the August 1936 issue of FM-Zeitschrift and depicts Ertl carrying the 1.SS-Standarte "Julius Schreck" standard. Ertl is on the left, and you can clearly make out his Blutorden in wear. Also note the '1' collar tab.

It was an incredible feeling to have found just one period image of 'my' Blood Order in wear, but the excitement I am now feeling from having two is, well... indescribable. Thanks again to Raymond for scanning in the image and sending it my way. I greatly appreciate it

What an excellent thread! I totally agree that researching is a major part of the fun and a major factor when i purchase something for my collection. I think it adds a lot to a badge or medal, if you have the provenance that it has been there, done that, with a name to remember. I have a Luftwaffe para badge with a broken pin, removed from the tunic of my wife's uncle's brother who was KIA at cassino and returned to his mother. I wouldn't part with it for anything!!!
