Did we (the brits) not offer the French fleet and seamen to join ours before they were 'inturned'? Or am I mistaken...

I believe some did. From what I have read, it seemed to depend a lot on the political orientation of the ships Captain. Some rebelled and joined the Allies, some obeyed the orders of Vichy. I'm still researching this.
