    WW2 Wehrmacht Soldier Search

    Does anyone out there know how I can research a Wehrmacht soldier named H Neumann, Neumann is probably a very common name? Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Bill

    Do you have the date of birth or if killed the death date or the town he was from? This would also be helpful. There were 1200+ German soldiers killed with the name Neumann and with the letter H in the first name.

      Thanks for the response. This is on a helmet with a Heer decal. I was wrong about the first initial, it is Jo Neumann. I have lots of names on my mind and the H is not right. The helmet was brought back by a 4th Infantry Division soldier. I do not have any other information. I figured there would be lots of Neumanns. Kindest Regards, Bill

        "Jo" is almost certainly short for "Johann" or "Johannes", and that name is very frequently the longer form of "Hans" (like William = Bill ). Even with this extra piece of information, it is nigh on impossible to find someone called Johann (Hans) Neumann unless you have a date of birth or some other piece of crucial information. By way of example, there are 162 "Johann(es) Neumann" on Volksbund and 196 "Hans Neumann".

          It is the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V., an organisation responsible for cataloging graves of German soldiers throughout all conflicts involving German soldiers. As was stated earlier, the more info you could get about the named soldier would help. The advantage is that you can narrow this down somewhat...you have a helmet linked to a Veteran who presumably found/retrieved it and brought it back...of course it could have been removed form a pile of helmets and might not even have come off of a fallen Soldier (let's hope that this was the case).
          Jo is likely an ebbreviation for Josef, possibly Joachim, or Jochen...Jonas is another possibility...

          You need to register, but it is free...of course it's all in German.
          Again, unless you have more info on the Vet or the soldier...you won't even know if he was KIA...which would steer you away from the Volksbund site...
