On the Axis history forum there was a database thread with SS number plates, maybe if you post there you might get the answer you need. Don;t want to post a link in case i break a rule or summat.

Are you sure the numberplate is SS 161244?

I cannot read it too well from the scan, but it looks more like SS 461244, or perhaps SS 46244.

I am not assured, but nevertheless, I think, that the first figure " 1 ".
After "SS", possibly, there is a dash, and then "1"...
