Feldpost number 42882

I found 2 envelops with a X-mas letter (12-12-1943) and 6 pictures inside a german mess tin.
On one of the envelops i see the Unit's name (can't read it good), and the feldpost number: 42882.

Can anyone help me? i have no idea were i can find a list of feldpost numbers.

Ah thank you, so my eyes wern't wrong.. because infront of the unit's name there are SS runes.

Hmm strange though what the other envelop does with it (the one with the pictures), because you can clearly see Wehrmacht soldiers on it, no SS.
On one of the pictures you see the train station with "arches" on the building.
When i look on the internet for towns i get 4 hits and only one with a train station,
its in France in the Vosges area, South-east of the city Epinal.

On the back of one of the other pictures the name Mariemont is written.
Thats a town, also in the Vosges area, far east of Epinal.


Heh damn, now i still don't know to which unit the Mess tin belonged ( MN 44 on the sides with an Rbnr and 44 on the front, with a '44 dated strap). Also with it were a pair of German Gamaschen.

I was thinking.. what if the soldier was tranfered? in the pictures they are all wearing early stuff, maybe he got transferd to SS Div. Nord?
No way i can find out... i think...

Its getting funny, i found this about the 6th SS Nord:

"After crossing the Skagerrak in a naval convoy, the Division briefly refitted in Denmark before entraining again for commitment on its next mission in Operation Nordwind in the Low Vosges mountains of southeastern France. It then fought primarily in the Vosges and in the Saar-Moselle triangle during the remaining months of the war."

So they fought in the Vosges area, same area the WH soldiers on the pictures were...

Hmm i found out what was written infront of the Feldpost number.
Its not the units name, but the soldiers name.

I see "SS-Rotth battariús 42882" (can be Lattariús or something).
I could have made a small mistake, wasn't Rotth for Rottenfüher? wasn't that an Obergefreiter?

I've scanned the pictures, first the envelop with the X-mas letter:

Here the envelop that was with the pictures, i beleve the envelop once holded something totaly differend, anyone thats good in german?


Here you can see the town name Arches.


On the back the town name Mariemont was written.


Unknown destroyed bridge.


Unknown monument.


Soldier humor, can't read the town name on the back good, maybe someone else can? i can read Soldaten hummor im ........ (soldier fun in ......).



A wedding picture, the name of a woman is written on the back, as well as the town and date.



I enlarged 2 parts of 2 photo's, looks like a Pionier unit right? that could explane why they were at the destroyed bridge.
