ARTILLERY Lt.Col. Tunic with neck loops for award, HELP

Hi Guys, just a couple questions. I bought a tunic recently with loops under the collar for a neck award, possibley the KC. The officer did not, however, recieve the DK. Is it common for an officer to not have received the DK, but been awarded the KC or is it perhaps another award?

    Hi Gerard.

The knights cross and the german cross are different things..
You didn't have to be holder of the german cross to be awarded the knights cross..

      Alex,
Thanks, that's what I thought. but was i very common? What would be a good resource to try to identify an unnamed tunic, based on the branch and rank? Are there any?

If you've nothing to go on other than a rank and service branch then the chances are zero. There are various possibilities for a neck order, non-German ones for example and an RK without a DK is quite common.

There are just so many variables here that without something more specific then i don't see how such a tunic could be tied down to one person. For example, was oberstleutnant this persons final rank? If an RK, was it awarded whilst an oberstleutnant or a more junior rank? Might he have gained other awards later? etc. etc.

                    Hi

There are certainly some pointers and clues on the tunic, but as Simon has commented, there are a large amount of variables that would make a definite identification very difficult.

I do not think that anything is impossible, but it would be very time consuming and then would not have a guarantee of success.

One thing is true, and that is it is a nice find

Well already the field can be narrowed down a little but i fear there's still too little to go on realistically.

The medal loop arrangement is quite distinctive and not the usual set up, the top left one is the most intriguing. If the ribbon bar is original to the tunic then we can see that we're dealing with a regular career officer that served at least 12 years yet doesn't seem to have served in WWI. One slim chance may be to see if there were any artillery units based at or near Schwerin that might have qualified for the Prague bar on the sudetenland medal. That's a real long shot though.
