    Obergefreiter W. Schmitt:

Pretty hard to find information on an individual from the Heeres Mannschaften with no first name and a relatively common last name. The frequency of the name "W. Schmitt" in an infinite German population is .0002272. So among the roughly 13,000,000 men who served in the Heer during World War II, there would be some 2,953 men with the name "W. Schmitt". You can try the following, but I wouldn't commit much money to the search:

Also see the pinned "Popular Topics and Frequently Asked Questions" post at the top of the sub-forum.

      Hi,
Assuming that he died on D-Day as that is where the helmet was taken, there are only 7 deaths of that name on the war graves site that died in june, 5 died in the east, 2 MIA . but no units given

Well, you've got it nicely narrowed down then. I'd say, "Go for it!" The only trouble is that it's nearly impossible to get WASt and BA-MA to do searches anymore for collectors, enthusiasts and hobbyists. You would pretty much have to prove to them that you are a family member.
