    personalized army dag

Hey guys, I was hoping somebody could give me a little adive or help on this. I picked up an early Voos army dagger at a gun show this wekend. When I got it home, I noticed a faint name scratched into the reverse crossguard. Nothing done by a jewler or any pro, but probably something by the soldier or liberating soldier. Anyway, the name is SAGEL. Does this sound like a german last name? If anyone has the time to look in a rangliste I would really be appreciative.
    thanks in advance,
    Bubi

HI there, Sagel is a relatively common name among Wehrmacht personnel... Have a look in the KIA/MIA database, as an indication of this. http://www.volksbund.de/graebersuche/content_suche.asp

The name, however, doesnt show up in the published 1944 army ranklist. I didnt check the others.

I collect and research named daggers from all three branches of the wehrmacht. One of the lessons i have learned is the near impossibility of arriving at any certain results on the basis of only a last name. Even when the published ranklists and major award lists have a single instance of the name, you check with the archives and they come up with 2-3 other instances among the (for example) Reserve officers lists.... Therefore, I now only go after named pieces that have at least name and rank, first initial, etc
