I pulled the MACR for all aircraft not returned to base from 04-19 onward and I just need to distill the information for the 8th. Piece of cake.

      OK, No 8th USAAF B-17 numbered "46820" was lost between 19 April 45 and 1 Nov 45.

Can we rethink the data that we are using and some of the assumptions we are working under.

Is it possible, or likely, that a crewmember that was shot down after 19 April 45 would be reintegrated into a combat unit to fly relief or POW missions so quickly, at the end of the war when there is a surplus of aircraft and aircrew. Possibly, but unlikely. Not doubting the man, or the story, just the information.

A copy of one of the relevant MACR indices is attached. Any comments?

I think we are showing some of the assumptions do not bear out:

        1) The family assumes that is his aircraft - why else photo it?
        2) We assume the family has the story right. For a vet who never spoke of his service, why would the details survive intact? I can't get the shopping list straight from my wife when she tells me in the morning.

Thanks for checking on this. Interesting the mom got a notice he was shot down though. That piece of info I doubt would be forgotten or misinterpreted. I have to think we have the wrong aircraft.

Marc, do we know what squadron? There are only a few 8th A/C downed that late in the European war.
