Hello. I was recently chatting to a new work colleague recently. He said "Oh, your the guy who collects German stuff". He lowered his voice and said "My grandfather was in the Waffen SS". He went on to say how he wished he had asked more questions but he was too young to appreciate his grandfather. He asked if I could help fill in the blanks. Perhaps someone here can?
Karl Engl was born in Austria and was a very good engineer. He also felt at home on the mountains and living off the land. His mechanical experteese found him on the Bismark prior to and in the early part of the war. Later, his skills as a backwoodsman found him in Finnland with a local SS unit. He ended the war reasigned as technical advisor to a German Embassy for the Japanese in the far east. Quite a varied career. My colleague has no Soldbuch or Wehrnummer. He also knows that he won the EKI early on. All he has is a Finnish knife and what sounds like an Ehredolch but I have yet to see it. It's a longshot but perhaps someone recognises this man?
