    SS-Sturmann - help with family research

    Hi there,
    I'm researching a particular member of my extended family who served in the German army on the Russian front. He was killed in action there. Any how, I have some documents from Deutsche Dienstelle relating to his military service and am hoping someone can tell me a bit more about the details included in the same. In particular, I want to know what actions he was involved in, and whether or not he was likely - or definitely, for that matter - involved in any criminal action(s) such as service in concentration camps or involvement in other war crimes. Copies of photographs or eyewitness accounts would be welcome. I would particularly be interested in seeing an example of an erkannungsmarken such as that he would have owned) Please be aware that this is family request for information, and there are obvious sensitivities involved. His details (sans surname, which I can provide via personal message) are below:

    I ran across your post during one of my earlier searches for Romanian entries on this site. I thought I would reply which may entice others to comment. I noticed a few errors but with the help of a my wife I was able to decipher your entry and had a great deal of fun doing so as this also aided my research into my family's history. Here is my translation with some addition notes where necessary:

    Gefallen: 02.05.1944 Baile Strunga bei Habaseti Raum Roman <--- Died: 02.May.1944 at Strunga, Romania, near Habasesti, Romania - at Strunga Springs (about 1 km from town)

    This last bit was the more interesting as the initial report (or your post) contained spelling errors and a few shorthand notes that needed clarification, deciphering, etc. The 'bei Habaseti Raum Roman" entry should read Habasesti (extra letter s) which is a small town in eastern Romania. The Baile Strunga is in reference to the springs (water drainage, really) near Strunga. My visit there confirms just that. Water drainage from the town down the ravine which must have been where some of the fighting took place.

    (He has a known grave) The little town of Strunga has a small church and there were bodies of German soldiers buried there. During out visit we asked the locals, who came out to see the foreigners, about these events and history. We got an earful and I enjoyed the moment along with some additional information. Apparently the Germans had returned to exhume the bodies just a few years ago, so the locals reported.
