    Hitlers Legion's by Mitchem

    Hi everyone

I am considering purchasing the book (out of Print) called Hitlers Legions by Mitchem (I believe). But before I do I want to make sure what is in it. I believe it is about German division containing a brief history of each.

Does this book contain the same information contained in the the German order of Battle books by Nafziger or "the Wehrmacht at War" by Kursietis. Neither of these books contain too much history of the divisions. Does "Hitlers Legions" contain a history of each division?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Sincerely

    Bradd

Not every single one, I think some of the Flak units are left out. I own this book and find it very useful in research...

Thanks Perry for your response. I think you have swayed me and I will purchase the book. I have been thinking about adding it for a while.

There is at least some "where" in the book, but the information on commanders etc is often woefully wrong. It's OK as a basic "OK, were they in Greece or Lithuania?" book, but do NOT rely upon it as a "Bible."

          Hi Rick:

I use the book for general infop. Some of the CO information about divisions is wrong, but all in all it is a good reference and should not be that expensive - though it is out of print.

As soon as the ribbon bar fotos are developed they are on their way to you...

Although I have this book I no longer use it...some of the vague locations and dates of divisions are completely false...in some cases the wrong front. This is not surprising seeing as this information has, for the most part been lifted straight from the British Intelligence handbook on German Armed Forces dated 1944. As you can imagine that has more than a few holes in it...

Personally I find it better just using google...just type the unit designation in German ie 2. Panzer Division.

I own this book and use it to fill in areas that aren't covered in Nafziger. It is the same kind of format and offers some of the same information.

                Brad,

Despite its errors, it is a must have for the price. I usually use it for a "first stop" in researching a unit, or when I just want a general overview. But like the others said, you shouldn't stop there.

As far as Nafziger goes, I can count on one hand the number of times I have used it in the last 6 months. Looks good on the shelf, though

Thanks Rick and everyone else for the help. I decided to buy (like Rick said it is pretty inexpensive) it. It sounds like it can help with basic research.

I think it's a right move Bradd, I keep mine handy as it's the first book I grab to get some quick Divisional history..Then if more research is needed I use it with other reference outlets...

Surely google is faster, cheaper and more accurate? And of course can usually turn up info on lower sized units than divisional.
