Units in Deventer

Hello,

Thanks for sharing that story.

If you research (local) war history you can find a lot of those unknown heroic acts of bravery done by individuals, the events just forgoten by history for some reason.
Those heroes deserve oure deepest respect.

When Deventer was liberated all of the KP members received a honour burial in Deventer, judging from the pictures that my grandfather took there (He was a photographer) it looked like half the city had come out to pay their respects.
Members of the KP had an Honours guard for days at the church where the coffins were.

Would it be possible to search for the division that Ernst Gräwe was in? I have been searching Google for him, but it shows the Wikipedia page as the only match with his entire name that is related to him. Do you think the people at IJsselstein know what division he belonged to? If they might know I will Email them

If he is buried at Ijselstein; contact the cemetery office they normally have details in their archive of the soldiers buried.

If so, Ysselsteyn should have more information on him: unit, id-tag, where he was first burried etc.

I had picture's of this incident I think a couple of years back. If I remember it was snowing and the people were lined up outside a barn with Ernst Gräwe amongst them. Just looking now for the pics.

From others killed in that area and the same day it is most likely that he was part of Fallsch. Hi Scott, thanks for the info. The fact you mention Fallschirm Div. 6 had confirmed my thoughts that they were of the 6th FJ. I knew there were 'paratroopers' (As labeled in Canadian battle diaries) in Deventer, but not sure what division. Since the 6th fought in nearby Zutphen for a week, I guessed it's remnants could've easily withdrawn to Deventer. So now I'm sure of this, thanks!

There were however also other units in town, I know of one tank unit, that was (partially) equipped with StuGs. There are also a few not so detailed pictures that show regular German soldiers wearing field caps and helmets, so there must've been some regular infantry as well. There was also Hitlerjugend in town.
