    SS Major, Erich Olboeter

I could use some help from someone who may have a book detailing the history of the 9th SS Panzer Div. Hohenstaufen. In particular, if Olboeter was ever assigned there during the period of March to August 1943.

I do know that he started out in the LAH, was awarded his silver wound badge and DK in late March 1943. From there his trail goes cold until he shows up with the Hitlerjugend later in '43.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Alan

Thanks Harmel, that sounds about right. My dilemma is where was he in April, May, June & July of '43

Since it seems he was wounded at Kharkov in March '43, anybody have any ideas about how to find someone in the hospital at that time? What would his unit be if he was in the hospital for this time? Re-assigned?

      Thanks, Alan

I had edited a post in the previous thread about Olboeter so you might have missed this.

[edit] Looking further at Vol.III of Lehmann's work on the Liebstandarte the transfer of personnel from the LAH to the newly forming HJ includes a detailed list of officers that left between the end of March and the end of June. On page 195 we have the following entry for the A.A.
"Abteilung commander Obersturmbannführer Kurt Meyer, the entire 1 Kompanie, Kompaniechef Olboeter"
Collecting German award documents, other paperwork and photos relating to Norway and Finland.

I'm afraid that doesn't really help much, did he leave at the end of March or the end of June or sometime in between? A 3 month window is pretty vague.

Harmel says he joins HJ on July 31, 1943, so again, where was he in April - July??

The point is that he was ordered transferred from the LAH to the HJ as part of the cadre used to form that division.

The 3 months is the period the LAH spent in rebuilding and restructering prior to Kursk. There was a major shift of personnel and that takes time.

            Further reading reveals the following.

13.5.43 - Hand over of command by the outgoing regiment and abteilung commanders

7.6.43-12.6.43 - elements destined to join the HJ division were loaded for transport.

            Then the following entry:-

"New Euipment as well as personnel replacements arriving to make up the losses of armoured and tracked vehicle drivers necessitated the establishment of a temporary armoured vehicle driving training school at Walki under the leadership of Hauptsturmführer Olboeter."
Collecting German award documents, other paperwork and photos relating to Norway and Finland.

Is this from the same Lehmann book?

So any info as to when this happened? where is Walki? Russia? Germany?

              Does anybody have this book;
"In the Firestorm of the Last Year of the War" by Wilhelm Tieke, it covers detailed history of the 9th & 10th ss pz divisions?

              Thanks, Alan

                yes it's from Lehmann.
The driving instruction course was around may/june.
Walki is in the soviet union, that's where the division was.

Hubert Meyer's book on the history of the 12th SS Pz.Div. would be worth a look
