Did the German Army use the Division number on vehicles? I have a photo of a command halftrack with 18 and G painted on the rear. I assume that it is 18 PD from Panzergruppe Guderian. Is that correct? Did the German Army often use the Division number on vehicles?

To the best of my knowledge they didn't other than a few rare cases when used as part of the unit's emblem or unless it was part of the tactical sign when used. I'd guess it was a vehicle number.Collecting German award documents, other paperwork and photos relating to Norway and Finland. -
Thank you Simon. I was pretty sure I had not seen the Division number used before. The vehicle number makes sense - any way to tell the Company number by this method?
The above markings look to be on the rear of a SdKfz 250. No antenna but looks to have the enclosed top. It looks like to be this model (from 16th PD - Oberst Sieckenius 1942).Comment
