    Prisoner Exchanges

    I have been watching several episodes of "Die Deutsche Wochenschau" and was suprised to see several clips of German prisoners being returned to Germany. In one instance they were still wearing the American denim "P W" uniforms and in another they were offloading from a ship in full German uniform - one in a panzerwrap complete with decorations! Both were in 1944, the second mentioned one was from the episode dated 31.5.44. In both situations there were items from Africa and or the Med theater, ie clothing, caps...

    I was suprised that this happened so late in the war. How often did this happen and what were the circumstances surrounding an exchange? Why would the Allies agree to an exchange?

    I hope this is the correct place, if not please move!
