Research help required , SS man/unit

I have a German helmet with the following engraved on the inside rim ,Hertz 2 SS Pi-37293 , the 2 is done as a Roman numeral . I would be gratefull for any information on man or unit , is the number a Feldpost number or his personal number .

Hi Eric, welcome to the forum!

The number is not one allocated to the Waffen SS as a FP number.

Here are the details for:

37293

(2.1.1940-27.4.1940) 4. Zug leichte Reserve-Flak-Batterie 207,
(28.2.1941-29.7.1941) gestrichen,
(1.3.1942-7.9.1942) 2. Kriegslazarett Kriegslazarett-Abteilung (mot.) 684.

Many thanks for your reply Adrian, the units corresponding to the FP number don`t tie up to the helmet , could this be his SS number on the helmet . It is odd that this is engraved and not just painted on . Thanks again .

Hi Eric, the numbers really make no sence. I seriously doubt it is an SS number.

Did you buy this helmet locally to you in Scotland? The reason I ask is that a number of bad helmets were for sale on a Scottish based website. I handled several of them in person. All were bad. I recall one or two with stamped / engraved numbers. Do you have any pics?

You say it is written:

Hertz II SS Pi-37293?

Is there any gaps between the numbers like Pi-3 7293??

II would indicate II Bataillon (2nd Battalion), however these units tended to only be I.Battalion in strength with 3 sometimes 4 Companies!!

Therefore II. would not make sense!!!

Hi Adrian , Yes I did buy the helmet from the dealer you are probably talking about and I was aware of his reputation but I considered the helmet to be OK. I don`t have any photos at present .Thanks again .
