Died at Monte Cassino

Hello my freinds.

I got this picture today. It shows the greatuncle of my wife. He died at Monte Cassino. Thats all we know. I try to find out in wich unit he served. Maybe you can help me with that. I also wonder why he were a pistol. As a normal soldier. No higher rank. So every help is welcome.

Certain jobs required the issue of a pistol at the level of Private. Machinegunner is one. Looks like the waffenfarbe on his shoulderstraps is infantry white.
