GAWNE, Jonathan. Finding Your Father's War: A Practical Guide to Researching and Understanding Service in the World War II U.S. Army.

This book, published just a couple of years ago, will tell you where to go for the information and how to request it. It's the only comprehensive guide on the subject, and it works just as well for researching someone in the post-WW II era. Hamilton's, that big wholesaler of remaindered books in Connecticut, was recently selling it for $1.00.
