Formed 12 July 1944 at Neuburg/Donau with Gruppenstab (ex-Stab IV./KG 1), 1.Staffel (ex-10./KG 1 and 10./KG 40), 2.Staffel (ex-11./KG 40), 3.Staffel (ex-12./KG 100) and 4.(Kehl) Staffel. The last-named operated special equipment associated with the FK guided weapons (Hs 293 and Fritz X). The Gruppe was responsible for providing replacement crews to all Heinkel He 177-equipped units. No sooner had it been formed than an order was issued by OKL to cease all He 177 training flights due to the critical fuel situation. After more than 3 months of inactivity, the Gruppe handed in its He 177s and was renamed IV./KG (J) 40 on 6 November 1944, while 4.Staffel retained its 5 He 177A-5s and became Ergänzungs- und Erprobungsstaffel FK. It should be noted that IV./KG (J) 40 never progressed past the planning stage.
