    Help with Unit ID

I posted a helmet on the helmet forum that has the following FP number painted in the rear of the skirt.

Ade Stevenson found the information associated with this number. Can anyone tell me what kind of unit this is? Where it was on these dates?

    FPN 51312

    (8.9.1943-22.4.1944) 18.2.1944 Hallenbau-Kompanie Ma 11/XI 1. Zug,
    (23.4.1944-24.11.1944) 24.8.1944 gestrichen.

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Hallenbau-Kp. Ma. 11/XI d.Lw.

Luftwaffe Hangar Construction Co. Ma. 11/XI

This one was raised in Luftgau XI in North Germany and was then sent to eastern Poland/western Belorussia to build hangars on rear-area airfields that the Luftwaffe wanted as large, permanent overhaul sites. Between Feb 42 and Aug 42, it was at Baranowicze/East Poland.

Toward the end of 1942, the Luftwaffe was operating in crisis mode to build up its infrastructure in the Mediterranean following the debacle in Libya and the Operation Torch invasion in western North Africa. This Kp. was transferred from eastern Poland to Cagliari/Sardinia and was building hangars and other infrastructure there in Feb 43 under Lw.-Feldbauamt Sardinien. The Kp. remained in the Italian theater until it was disbanded at the beginning of Feb 44. Its 1. Zug was spun off, given its own Feldpost number (51312), and continued operating until it too was disbanded in mid-August 1944.

That's all I have. Unfortunately, I do not know the meaning of the abbreviation "Ma." in this context. That abbreviation is most normally encountered as the abbreviation for Munitionsanstalt (Munitions Establishment).

Glad to help, Mark. Just for the sake of completeness, the "Ma." may refer to the initials of a German construction firm. Some of these highly specialized Luftwaffe construction, engine overhaul, airframe maintenance and other types of units were set up by the Luftwaffe and then supervised by civilian firms operating under a Luftwaffe contract. So, for example, in a company of say 180 men, 165 would be active duty Luftwaffe personnel in various grades and the other 15 would be civilian supervisors and specialists employed by the construction firm. This could be case here.
