Obviously many got away with it, due to photos you see.

I don't know what the regulations were, but I have a number of Death Cards showing the soldier with a 'Hitler' moustache.
I believe this was acceptable - but nothing bushy due to hygiene considerations. Mainly to prevent Lice.

Moustaches and beards were not uncommon. I have many photos in my collection showing both.
